Scanning refers to reading a text quikly in order to locate specific pieces of information.

When scanning :

1. don't start from the beginning and read to the end. Jump around in the text, trying to find the information you need
2. can't read every word / skip many word
3. look for information as quickly as you can

You can scann

• A table of contents in abook or magazine
• An index in a textbook
• A timetable
• The ads in a newspaper
• A list of movie in the newspaper
• A telephone book, the page of a dictionary

You usually don't scann

• A mystery story
• Atextbook for an important course
• A map for finding your away home
• A question on a test
